Ross Announces DEP Grants for Communities

September 22, 2016

Boston – State Senator Richard Ross is pleased to announce that the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) has recently awarded municipal/regional grants under its Sustainable Material Recovery Program (SMRP) to 11 cities and towns in the Norfolk, Bristol and Middlesex District. The towns represented by Senator Ross that have received grant awards include Franklin, Millis, Natick, Needham, Norfolk, North Attleboro, Plainville, Sherborn, Wayland, Wellesley and Wrentham.

Created under the Green Communities Act, the SMRP allocates a portion of the proceeds from the sale of Waste Energy Certificates to recycling programs approved by the MassDEP. Municipalities are awarded grants for recycling, composting and reuse and source reduction activities that help divert municipal solid waste and household waste from disposal.

“The process of responsibly managing solid waste is not only the responsibility of us as citizens, but is necessary for a healthy and green community environment,” said Senator Ross. “I am pleased that my district is actively taking part in various environmental protection procedures.”
